Scirea is one of only five players in European football history -join to Antonio Cabrini, Sergio Brio, Stefano Tacconi and Danny Blind- to have won all international trophies for football clubs recognized by UEFA and FIFA [4]. He played for the Italian national team for more than a decade during which he was irreplaceable as the leading defender, keeping Franco Baresi out of the national team for four years until he retired in 1986. Scirea became a World Champion with the 1982 FIFA World Cup winning team, defeating Brazil 3-2 in a brilliantly played quarter-final match, and dominating Germany 3-1 in the final.
Scirea was a graceful defender of great skill and tactical ability. In contrast to the ruthless tactics often employed by other defenders, most notably his paired partner, Claudio Gentile, Scirea was renowned for his class, fair play and sportsmanship. Scirea was never sent off or suspended during his entire career, which is probably a football record for a defender of international level, and this says a lot about his temperament and the level of his skill.
He played the sweeper, or libero, role for most of his career, and contributed to the development of this position initiated by Franz Beckenbauer in the 1970s. Thus, Scirea would detach himself from the defensive line and contribute to the attacking potential of his team, frequently being involved in the build-up of goals, and sometimes even scoring himself. In the latter part of his career, Scirea played a more defensive central-defender role, which he excelled at just the same.
Career
Scirea was born at Cernusco sul Naviglio, in the province of Milan.
Scirea made his Serie A debut for Atalanta against Cagliari on 24 September 1972. He remained with Atalanta for two seasons, before transferring to Juventus, with whom he would stay until the end of his playing career. In all he made 397 appearances in Serie A, scoring 24 goals. Scirea saw great success with the Italian giants, playing alongside the hard-hitting Claudio Gentile, and winning every possible trophy to offer in the game.
It has been said that because Scirea was so quietly effective in his position on the field and so quiet in general off the field he did not win as many personal honours throughout the years as other more outspoken and media-friendly players during that time. It was only after his retirement that the wider audience realized and appreciated his fantastic importance to the cause of Juventus and the Italy national football team.

Soon Scirea was called up to the Italian national team, making his debut on 30 December 1974 against Greece. He immediately became an irreplaceable pillar of the team managed by Enzo Bearzot, and played in three World Cups and one European Championship in 1980. The team of the period 1978–1982 was one of the strongest Italian sides of the post-war period. Scirea impressed in the 1978 World Cup where Italy finished in fourth place. At the 1982 World Cup, after a quiet start, Italy burst to life, beating Argentina and then Brazil in a thrilling match. A 3-1 victory over West Germany in the final earned Scirea a lasting place in World Cup history. By 1986 World Cup, however, the team was in transition, and went out to France in the second round. This was to be Scirea's last match for Italy, having won 78 caps and scoring 2 goals.
Scirea is thought of by many as the best Italian defender of all time and the fact that he kept the outstanding Franco Baresi out of the team for so long is indicative of his sustained brilliance.

He retired from club football at the end of the 1987–1988 season, one of the poorest in Juventus' history. Following this he took up the role of scout at Juventus, but was killed in a car crash at Skierniewice, Poland.
Scirea was there as an observer since Juventus was to play a match in the UEFA Cup against Górnik Zabrze; due to the gasoline shortages, quite common in then-economically-backward Poland it was commonplace for cars to store rather large quantities of gas canisters in their trunks.
So renowned has Gaetano Scirea become that since then his name has become attached to various youth tournaments and fair-play awards, as a role model for sportsmanship and sporting excellence.

Juventus tekuk Siena 1-0
Turin - Juventus berhasil menjaga peluang mengejar Inter Milan di puncak klasemen dengan menundukkan Siena 1-0. Alessandro Del Piero menjadi bintang dengan menjadi satu-satunya pemain yang menjaringkan bola.
Dalam pertandingan di Olimpico Turin, Minggu (11/1/2009) malam WIB, Del Piero memenangkan tuan rumah lewat gol spesialisasinya, tendangan bebas, di menit ke-33.
Hasil ini membuat Juve merapat ke Inter di posisi kedua dengan nilai 39, terpaut empat angka dengan pimpinan sementara Seri A itu, yang sehari sebelumnya ditahan imbang 1-1 oleh Cagliari. Adapun Siena terpaku di urutan ke-15 dengan 19 poin.
Jalannya pertandingan
Pertandingan baru berjalan empat menit, peluang pertama justru didapat oleh tim tamu. Houssine Kharja langsung membahayakan gawang Alex Manninger, namun gol urung tercipta.
Di menit ke-16 Siena kembali mendapatkan peluang. Sebuah kesalahan dari barisan pertahanan Juve berhasil dimanfaatkan oleh Kharja untuk memberikan umpan pada Emanuele Calaio. Nama terakhir gagal melepaskan shooting, tapi bola mengarah pada Cristiano Del Grosso yang langsung melepaskan tembakan dari luar kotak penalti.
Bola tembakan Del Grosso berhasil di blok oleh Zdenek Grygera. Walaupn terlihat menyentuh tangan, namun wasit tidak menunjuk titik putih, karena bek Ceko tersebut dalam posisi yang pasif.
Sembilan menit kemudian, Siena kembali menekan Juve. Sebuah kerjasama apik Del Grosso-Kharja berhasil diteruskan oleh playmaker Maroko itu dengan sebuah tembakan. Beruntung bagi "Si Nyonya Tua", bola masih melebar.
Peluang kemudian ganti didapat Juve. Sebuah pelanggaran kepada Pavel Nedved di luar kotak penalti membuahkan tendangan bebas. Kesempatan tersebut pun tak disia-siakan oleh Del Piero. Bola sepakannya melengkung dan menembus gawang Siena. Tuan rumah unggul satu gol di menit ke-33.
Di sisa babak, kedua tim silih berganti menyerang, namun tidak membuahkan peluang yang berarti. Kedudukan 1-0 pun bertahan hingga turun minum.
Lima menit memasuki babak kedua, Juve kembali mendapat tendangan bebas di sisi kiri pertahanan Siena. Bola kembali dihadapi sang spesialis tendangan bebas, Del Piero. Sayang baginya, tembakannya tak semulus sebelumnya dan melayang di atas mistar gawang.
Kerjasama Carvalho Amauri dengan Del Piero dan Marco Marchioni beberapa kali merepotkan pertahanan Siena. Namun gol tambahan tetap belum tercipta. Sedangkan serangan Siena yang dimotori oleh Kharja beberapa kali gagal karena termakan perangkap off-side Juve.
Di menit 73 Amauri berhasil menahan bola dan memberikannya kepada Del Piero. Sang kapten langsung melepaskan tembakan, tapi bola masih melebar dari bidang sasaran.
Jelang laga berakhir, Siena semakin intensif menyerang. Di menit 82, Abdel Kader Ghezzal berhasil melepaskan tembakan, namun masih bisa dihalau Manninger.
Sejurus kemudian, peluang tim tamu lewat Mario Frick dan Douglas Riccardo Packer memanfaatkan corner kick juga berhasil disapu bek-bek Juve. Tembakan jarak jauh Packer juga masih bisa ditangkap oleh Manninger.
Di sisa laga kedua tim masih berusaha menyerang, namun hingga peluit panjang dibunyikan wasit, tidak ada gol tercipta. Juve pun mengantongi kemenangan tipis 1-0.
